The unofficial survey in the Teesdale Mercury regarding the four draft options for the Market Cross generated a great deal of response. The Vision partnership were delighted that so many people are prepared to get involved and share their views. In the survey 50 completed tick-box forms were handed in and the results were as follows:
Option 1 - move it 40 yards. Nine votes
Option 2 - Create a roundabout around it. Eight votes
Option 3 - Create an island beside it with pedestrian crossings and 20mph speed limit
The least popular option receiving just 3 votes
Option 4 - install traffic lights and a one-way system past it. 17 votes
13 readers suggested that none of the options should be progressed.
We say
We want to reconnect the Market Cross to the cobbles, to make access to the building easier, so that it can be brought back into use as a covered market and so that people can look around it. The Vision has commissioned a structural survey and is working with Highways and architects at Durham County Council to see if the road layout around the Market Cross can be altered to make the crossing safer.
