History

In 2006, Teesdale District Council (TDC), with partners Teesdale Local Strategic Partnership, Teesdale Marketing and One NorthEast (the Regional Development Agency) and County Durham Economic Partnership (CDEP) commissioned EKOS Consulting, working with Building Design Partnership and Donaldsons LLP, to undertake a study of the market town of Barnard Castle.

The first stage of the Vision work was the production of a baseline report, which set out the policy and regeneration context and the current position in the town with regard to socio-economic indictors, the environment, property and transport. From this, a series of issues and opportunities for Barnard Castle and the surrounding area were identified.

Following extensive consultation a new shared 20 year vision and development strategy for Barnard Castle was published in May 2007. The study has established the potential within the town and its hinterland for an economic 'step change' to make the area a sustainable growth point for County Durham based on a clear understanding of the quality and character of the historic town.

Alongside the Vision work, the Teesdale Economic Strategic Options Study proposes the economic future for the wider district.

The Barnard Castle Vision Board has begun implementing the Vision. The Phase I implementation involves extensive desk-based studies of potential development sites, a streetscape strategy for the town and transport and access study. This work is a necessary to achieve large-scale capital investment.
