The Market Cross
The Barnard Castle Vision would like to:
-Restore and conserve the building for the benefit of locals and visitors-Provide safer access for pedestrians-Establish a regular programme of maintenance and repair with Durham County Council.A number of schemes were drawn up in relation to improving the access working with Highways and designers from the Urban Design team within DCC. These were presented to local DCC members but no agreement was reached to progress any of the potential schemes further. It was agreed an up-to-date full structural and condition survey be undertaken to establish the current state of the building and any repairs required.Burns Architects gained quotations from a number of engineers and Patrick Parsons were appointed to carry out the work. This work was done and a report submitted in March 2011. The report concluded that there was a requirement for roof tying to prevent further movement and deterioration. A repair schedule has been put together and will be carried out in 2012.
Work is underway to repair the ceiling of the ground floor of the Market Cross. This is being undertaken by Durham County Council.
