Streetscape and transport studies
15/02/2008
Manchester-based consultants Building Design Partnership (BDP) and SK Transport Planning have presented initial research and proposals for improvements to the town's streetscape and transport. The team presented its ideas for new architectural feature lighting for the Castle, Butter Market and The Bowes Museum as well as extending the existing heritage lighting along Newgate. Changing the light colour in the historic centre and lighting the various 'yards' that link the town centre with 'white light' will transform the town centre after dark, helping to generate an evening economy.
Other discussions centred on enabling pedestrian access to the Butter Market and improving the management of car parking and restricting HGV access, informed by the findings of new traffic surveys.
The consultants' work will continue until the end of March.
