High Speed Broadband Underway

On behalf of Barnard Castle Vision, Durham County Council has issued a tender inviting applications for the contract to install ‘next-generation’ broadband access to Teesdale.
Following more than two years’ work to establish the feasibility of the project, and to identify potential funding sources, the Vision says that the project is now able to progress. Barnard Castle Vision has worked closely with Teesdale Action Partnership (TAP) and The Enterprise Agency on this project to bring high speed broadband to as much of Teesdale as possible. Its aim is to have the work completed by early 2011.
Dr Anne Allen of Barnard Castle Vision said: “Our aim is to achieve high speed broadband for as many people as possible, not only supplying to businesses, but bringing fast internet access to people’s homes too.
“This is a vital step in giving businesses the facilities to thrive in Teesdale, and will massively increase the viability of knowledge-based and creative companies. Whereas the lack of broadband has excluded businesses from locating to this area, this project will put Teesdale way ahead of many other areas in connectivity, and will no doubt play a major part in future economic growth.”
Councillor Barbara Harrison, Chair of the Teesdale Action Partnership, commented: “We really welcome any step forward for the broadband agenda, and are delighted to see so many organisations working closely together to this effect. Barnard Castle Vision has played an essential part in making this happen, and in progressing this exceptionally positive project to the point of implementation.
“With next generation broadband, more businesses will have the opportunity to develop here. It will also put an end to most of the existing broadband blackspots, bringing people who are currently excluded into the internet age.”
