Shop Till You Drop in Barnard Castle

02/12/2009

The countdown to Christmas gets well and truly underway in Barnard Castle next weekend with the Christmas Farmers Market and ‘Shop Till You Drop’ event taking place in the town centre on Saturday 5th December.

The Christmas Farmers Market, which will run throughout the day until 7pm, features a wide selection of seasonal produce from local farmers, perfect for every Christmas meal. As part of the ‘Shop Till You Drop’ initiative, many of the retailers along the High Street will also be opening their doors till late and joining in the celebrations.

“The annual Christmas Farmers Market in Barnard Castle is an immensely popular event,” says Barnard Castle Vision’s Annalisa Ward. “This year is no exception and by opening late we aim to enable as many people as possible to come along. We’d like to extend our thanks to all those involved in making the day happen, particularly the Barney Guild and all the artists, entertainers and musicians who will be taking part throughout the day."

Shops and cafés in Barnard Castle which are set to open late include Claire’s International, Pennys, Zara Country Clothing, Smithys, the barbers, The Sweet Box, Brookes Outfitters, Barnard Castle Jewellers, Mon Petit Spa, Andalucia, Sarah Clare and Finlays.

Taking a break from shopping, members of the public are also encouraged to ‘get crafty’ on several stalls provided by the town’s arts and crafts community which will be operating at the Market from 10am until 2pm. Activities include leather work with Karen Beenie, card-making with Anne Mason and decoration-making with Gillian Tallentire. In the case of bad weather, these activities will take place in The Witham Room (upstairs at the Witham) from 12pm.

Street entertainment throughout the day will include juggling, stilt walking and a spectacular display by a Fire Artist at 5pm. Music on the streets will also be provided by the Barney Band and the Good Company Recorder Group.

Further information on the Christmas Farmers Market and ‘Shop Till You Drop’ events can be found on leaflets around the town, or by telephoning 01833 696263.
