New Digital Art Gallery Showcases Works by Young People

12/03/2010

A wide range of artwork by young people from across Barnard Castle is now on display in the heart of the town.

Through Barnard Castle Vision’s Digital Art Gallery project, The Box, situated on Galgate in the centre of the town, has become a new digital art venue, showcasing the works of Barnard Castle’s young people across its screens.

“This is a very exciting project which aims to bring art to the centre of town and make good use of The Box for young people’s benefit,” says Dr Anne Allen of Barnard Castle Vision. “This is the first time that under-18s have had an artistic outlet in the town centre, so this is an excellent way in which our young people to communicate their ideas and aspirations to the rest of the community.”

The digital presentation being scrolled across the screens inside The Box is made up of many of the artwork images received by the Vision as part of the project. The presentation is able to be updated as regularly as required.

All schools within the town have been invited to contribute their artwork. Initial works on show include pieces by Montalbo Road Primary School and Barnard Castle School’s senior and A-level students, while works from Deerbolt Young Offenders Institution are also expected to go on display in the near future.

“The Digital Art Gallery project is a tremendous opportunity for the talents of Barnard Castle’s young people to reach a wider audience and be recognised by the general public,” comments Suzanne Cuthbertson, Head of Art from Barnard Castle School. “We are very pleased to be involved.”

Anyone under the age of 18 who would like to show their work on The Box should contact Amberley Elliott at Barnard Castle Vision on 01833 696211, e-mail amberley.elliott@durham.gov.uk. All images are welcome, from scanned oil paintings to photographs of ceramics.
